30 personalities, 30 favourite WorldSBK races

30 different personalities from WorldSBK and MotoGP™ have explained their favourite WorldSBK races over the last six weeks…

In a series of articles, MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship have been bringing you the favourite races from WorldSBK history as told by World Superbike champions, stars, journalists and also from riders and personalities from within MotoGP™.

Volume 1 started with 2009 FIM Supersport World Championship title winner Cal Crutchlow selecting a classic from 2000 Brands Hatch while Giorgio Barbier (Pirelli Racing Director) for the mixed conditions providing excellent racing. Other personalities in Volume 1 include Eurosport UK presenter and pundit Charlie Hiscott, Chaz Davies (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati) and Pere Riba (Crew Chief for Jonathan Rea – Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK).

The next article in the series, Volume 2, featured Rea and James Toseland as the headline acts; a combined seven WorldSBK titles between them. Toseland selected Assen 1998 Race 2, a race that he got to watch from inside the paddock while Rea selected a race he won but had lower expectations for heading into the weekend. A first win for PATA YAMAHA WorldSBK Official Team’s Michael van der Mark was Team Manager Paul Denning’s choice while Mika Kallio and Sky Sport Italia’s Max Temporali also made their selections in this volume.

Volume 3 featured MotoGP™ star Maverick Viñales as one of five characters selecting their favourite races as the Spanish rider selected a race featuring an epic battle between two Championship heavyweights. 2009 WorldSBK Champion Ben Spies also featured in this volume, selecting a race he won from pole position, while Eugene Laverty (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) selected a race he won in while not being the quickest rider. GMT94 Yamaha Team Manager Christophe Guyot selected Anderstorp 1991 Race 2 for comical events that happened after the race and WorldSBK commentator Steve English went for a special performance by Steve Hislop.

Two-time WorldSBK Champion Max Biaggi and current star Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) headlined Volume 4 of the series with Biaggi choosing his first WorldSBK race and Bautista selecting a race where he rode through the pain barrier to achieve victory. Andrew Pitt, who won a race in WorldSBK and is now van der Mark’s Crew Chief, podium finish Simon Crafar and Valentino Rossi’s former Crew Chief Silvano Galbusera also selected their favourite races.

Van der Mark and Dorna’s WorldSBK Executive Director from the Sporting and Organization Departments, Gregorio Lavilla, featured in Volume 5 of the series. 2014 WorldSBK Champion Sylvain Guintoli also discussed his favourite race in this series; selecting a tense title decider he was involved with. MotoGP™ race winner Alberto Puig and RTVE journalist Marc Martin also appeared in this volume.

The final article, Volume 6, was full of World Champions and current stars. Five-time World Champion Jorge Lorenzo and 2018 FIM Supersport300 World Championship title winner Ana Carrasco featuring. Current WorldSBK points leader Alex Lowes also chooses his favourite race in his volume too alongside WorldSSP and Moto3™ Champion Sandro Cortese and Australian MotoGP™ star Jack Miller.
