Di Persio doubles up in Misano to take championship lead after Round 2

The Italian rider led Jean Kento Turner and Chris Clark into Parc Ferme to close out the round at Misano

Alessandro di Persio completed a near-perfect weekend with a double victory at Round 2 of the FIM Yamaha R3 BLU CRU World Cup at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli.

The Italian missed out only on pole position in the series’ sole visit to Italy this season, with his double win seeing him launch into the lead of the Championship by four points after the first two events.

Race 2 proved to be another dramatic affair, with the multiple-lead changes typical of R3 World Cup battles, but as in Saturday’s opening race, a flurry of crashes in the final stages added to the drama and crucially allowed Di Persio to break free for victory.

Jean Kento Turner (Japan) took a debut podium finish in second place, with series leader after the first round Chris Clark (USA) recovering from a tough weekend to return to the podium in third as multiple contenders crashed out unhurt on the final lap, including Indonesia’s Arai Agaska who led across the line more than any other rider during the race.

Dawid Nowak (Poland) finished fourth ahead of Saturday’s polesitter Angelo Mottola (Italy) while Mario Salles of Brazil completed the top six.

Salvatore Germano (Italy) recovered from his double long lap penalty for irresponsible riding in Saturday’s opening race to finish seventh with Daniel Krabacher (Austria), wildcard Viggo Mégard (Netherlands) and Matteo Truoiolo (Italy) completing the top ten.

Alessandro di Persio said: “It was the craziest race of my life! It is a dream, a double at home in Misano with my friends and family here is a complete dream. Thank you so much to Arco MotoR University for all of their support, and now we will see in Donington!”
