Reigning champion secures first Laguna double

Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) was beaming from ear to ear after his sensational Laguna Seca double victory this weekend, as he looked right at home with his ZX-10RR machine. Dominating the MOTUL FIM Superbike field in the only way he knows how, Rea has now extended his championship lead to 75 points.

Starting his weekend with a sensational race pace, the Northern Irish rider never looked back and put in stunning performances on both Saturday and Sunday. Fighting through from the third row of the grid, it was a tough challenge for Rea as Laguna is notoriously difficult to overtake around, but he wasn’t in a hurry. Putting in some strong moves, Rea was confident that he was able to have a strong enough pace to bide his time.

Explaining his delight, Rea begins: “I am so so so happy, to have a weekend like we’ve had – to be so strong. It doesn’t happen every weekend, this weekend – aside from my tip off on Friday – its been plain sailing. I was able to make my passes, make them stick and go away.”

Catching up with his old-time rival Laverty, it was at this point his race changed: “Eugene had a really good pace and was a really good marker. I was in no urgency to arrive and then step by step I got there, and then made my rhythm. It was awesome to see my rhythm increasing, and then just five or six laps to go I was absorbing the feeling in Laguna Seca in the sunshine I just felt so blessed to be here and it’s a cool moment.”
