PREVIEW: five riders separated by 25 points as WorldSSP300 gets set to take on the Aragon wall

WorldSSP300 is back in action two weeks on from a thrilling visit to France as the field gets set for MotorLand Aragon

The FIM Supersport 300 World Championship returns to action at MotorLand Aragon for what is sure to be an incredible Tissot Aragon Round as riders battle for victory. Unpredictability was the order of the day last time out and that will continue at the Spanish venue as the title race heats up and riders look to gain any advantage possible over their rivals in the fight to be crowned the final WorldSSP300 Champion.

THE TOP FIVE: separated by just 25 points

Incredibly, just one win separates the top five in the standings, as Benat Fernandez (Team#109 Retro Traffic Kove) leads with 150 points. He has an 11-point advantage over David Salvador (Team ProDina XCI) in second, who was a Magny-Cours winner, ahead of Julio Garcia (Prodina Kawasaki Racing Sport). Garcia will have to pass a pre-round medical check in order to race; he missed out on the French Round and, while he dropped to third in the standings, didn’t lose a huge amount of ground in the title race. Jeffrey Buis (Freudenberg KTM – Paligo Racing) and Carter Thompson (MTM Kawasaki) both have 125 points as they look to close the gap to Fernandez in P1; like Garcia, Buis will face a pre-round medical check on Thursday after being declared unfit at Magny-Cours. The two-time Champion has won at Aragon four times and he, along with Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki), are the only Aragon winners on this year’s entry list. Don’t discount the Kawasaki rider from victory after his almost perfect comeback last time out.

STILL IN CONTENTION: a lot of ground needs to be made up in Spain…

Thompson has a relatively big, but not insurmountable, lead over Humberto Maier (Yamaha AD78 FIMLA by MS Racing) in sixth in the standings, with the Brazilian still searching for a first race victory; his first aim, however, will be to score a point at Aragon – his best finish at the Spanish circuit is 16th. Matteo Vannucci (PATA AG Motorsport Italia WorldSSP300) was back on form at Magny-Cours with a double podium, making it his highest-scoring round with 40 points since the 2023 visit to Imola; he almost doubled his points tally for the season in France (40 compared to 46 in the first four rounds). Antonio Torres (Team ProDina XCI) is just a point behind the Italian and he’ll hope for a podium fight at the circuit he made his debut at in 2023.

FIGHTING INSIDE THE TOP TEN: can Mogeda return to the rostrum?

Marco Gaggi (Team BrCorse) sits ninth in the standings, some 19 points behind Torres, and will hope to close that gap or move ahead, while Pepe Osuna (ZAPPAS-DEZA-BOX 77 Racing Team) is narrowly inside the top ten on 61 points. He’s nine ahead of Daniel Mogeda (Pons Motosport Italika Racing) who will hope home soil helps him return to the sort of form he showed earlier in the season with his Assen Race 2 rostrum, although P4 in Race 2 at Magny-Cours was his best result since that podium.

RIDER LINE-UP NEWS: three wildcards on the grid

Uriel Hidalgo (ZAPPAS-DEZ-BOX 77 Racing Team) will hope to be back on track and faces a pre-round medical check after being declared unfit at Most with a right femur fracture. Decksa Almer Alfarezel joins the grid for the first time at ProGP NitiRacing, stepping in for Arai Agaska. Elsewhere, Jakob Rosenthaler (Freudenberg KTM - Paligo Racing) returns as a wildcard alongside Daniel Ocete (Pons Motosport Italika Racing) and Tomas Marin (ZAPPAS-DEZA-BOX 77 Racing Team); the latter making his WorldSSP300 debut.
