The 2019 WorldSSP Champion will link up with Luca Bernardi’s CM Racing for the 2021 Catalunya Round, while Bernardi underwent an operation on his back injury

2019 FIM Supersport World Championship title winner Randy Krummenacher will make the switch to CM Racing for the Hyundai N Catalunya Round, taking the place of Sammarinese rider Luca Bernardi as the teenager recovers from a fractured T12 vertebra sustained in a Race 2 crash in the early stages of the encounter at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours, with the Sammarinese rider undergoing a successful operation in Italy.

Bernardi was diagnosed with a T12 vertebra fracture following the Race 2 crash at Magny-Cours and underwent the operation at the M. Bufalini hospital in Cesena, Italy, to help reduce the fracture with the introduction of a plate. His next steps and recovery time are being worked out, but with the injuries sustained he will be “forced to miss a few rounds” and the team have opted to bring in 2019 Champion Krummenacher as his replacement.

Krummenacher returned to WorldSSP after missing most of the 2020 season with the EAB Racing Team, consistently fighting for the top ten positions and taking a podium finish in Race 2 at the TT Circuit Assen, his best result of the 2021 campaign. CM Racing have shown strong pace this season with Bernardi claiming one pole position this season and five podiums.

The Swiss rider claimed the 2019 title after a close battle with then-teammate Federico Caricasulo (now Biblion Iberica Yamaha Motoxracing) and has six wins to date in WorldSSP. His title came when competing for the Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha outfit, with CM Racing working with the team throughout 2021.

Krummenacher, who has therefore split with the EAB Racing Team he has spent 2021 with, said: “I would like to personally thank Team EAB Team Principal, Ferry Schoenmakers, who has understood the situation and left me free to ride the CM bike. The technicians working there are the people with whom I won the 2019 world title and so I see a real opportunity there. I also want to thank Alessio Cavaliere, Team Principal at CM Racing, for thinking of me as a replacement for Luca Bernardi. And I hope that Luca, a rider I very much respect, enjoys a speedy recovery and can soon be back on track”.

Alessio Cavaliere, CM Racing Team Principal added: “Unfortunately Luca will be forced to miss a few rounds due to the injury, but I'm sure he will come back stronger than before, and we will be here waiting for him. At the same time, we have to concentrate on giving the maximum support to Randy, who like us is very keen to get a place in the top ranks of the Championship. I would like to thank the EAB Racing Team for their help with the operation, and of course I hope to achieve great results together with Randy”.

Manuel Cappelletti, CM Racing Team Director said: "First of all our thoughts go to Luca, who we hope to have back on track with us as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will be able to count on the experience and speed of Krummenacher, a rider who in the recent past has been the reference point for the category, thanks also to the great work of the Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team, our close collaborator".
