The German rider was transferred to hospital and underwent surgery for a fractured vertebra

Following his crash at the end of Race 1 for the Motul Portuguese Round, Sandro Cortese (OUTDO Kawasaki TPR) had a successful arthrodesis procedure above and below the injured T7 vertebrae. The procedure was at the level of T5-T6 and T8-T9. Cortese had also been declared to have a fracture of the right tibial bone, with further assessment revealing four fractured ribs on the right-hand side as well as a suspected fracture of the right ankle.

Cortese had been showing competitive pace throughout the Portuguese Round at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, qualifying in 14th place onboard his Kawasaki ZX-10RR and was fighting his way back through the field after losing five places at the start of the race.

Everyone at WorldSBK and beyond wishes Sandro a speedy recovery.
