Kev Coghlan: "I proved to myself I can run at the front"

After scoring his best result in WSS in his first race on a Yamaha, the Scotsman looks forward to Aragon.

Kev Coghlan (DMC-Panavto Yamaha) has started off well his second season in the Supersport World Championship by scoring a second place at Phillip Island. The 25 year old from Perth, Scotland, has adapted well to the Yamaha YZF-R6 and now looks forward to the next round, that will take place at MotorLand Aragon (Spain) on April 11-13.

Best WSS result in the first round of your second season, in your maiden race aboard the DMC-Panavto Yamaha YZF-R6. How do you feel?
"Yes, after already picking up my best result in just the first race it feels great. Also, more from the first start I think I proved to myself that I can run at the front, we were right there with Kenan and Mickey! Now the real test will be to see if you can stay there consistently over the whole season!"

You admitted you thought there was one lap left, but then you realised it was the end of the race…
"Yes, I still can't believe I made that mistake with the laps, but in my defense I don't think I've had such a short race since club racing on the Superteen bikes! (laughs)"

Was it a smooth transition to Yamaha or you still have to fully adapt to it? Do you think it is already a step forward compared to last year’s bike?
"It has been quite a smooth transition to the Yamaha, we've taken things step by step and are getting better all the time. I feel like I still need to adapt to the bike a little better but it's coming. On a while we are a step forward from last year, but it's the whole package, my approach to training and race has changed a lot over winter, everyone in the team has stepped up their game and the bike package is great! All these details have given us a real boost in terms of results."

You were in second place when the race was red flagged; then again, you were fighting for the win after the restart. How hard is to keep the focus and the concentration in this type of situation?
"Keeping focused for the restart wasn't a real issue. We've had worse situations i.e. Monza last year. The biggest challenge was to adapt to the short sprint race."

Judging by the first race it looks like the battle for the win this year will involve several riders. What is your view on it?
"This year I think there will be a few guys fighting at the front. At the moment Kenan is still the main man. He has the most experience, the most speed but also the most pressure to win the championship. My aim before the first race was to be a regular top 5 finisher this year and so far that hasn't changed. We can't get too carried away by one good result at the start of such a long season."

Last year at MotorLandAragon you qualified on the 2nd row and you your first WSS shot at the lead, before a crash ruled you out of the fight for the podium. How do you feel about the upcoming race? Do you like the track?
"Aragon is a track I'm looking forward to. We had some good speed there last year and I know the place well from my days in the Spanish CEV series. It's a great track with lots of changes in elevation and every type of corner you could ask for. A trackI'vealwaysenjoyed!"
