Provisional pole goes to Melandri
Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike) came good on the second morning of Magny-Cours qualifying when he powered to the provisional pole with a time of 1 minute 38.171 seconds. The Italian, only 14th yesterday, was a tenth ahead of the two Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducatis in the hands of Sylvain Guintoli and Jakub Smrz.

Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike team) was next up, the first of three S 1000 RR machines with Leon Haslam and Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) right behind.

Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) failed to improve on his Friday time, and slipped down to tenth, behind Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team Superbike).

Ruben Xaus did not take part in Q2, the Spaniard unfit to race due to neck muscle problems after yesterday's crash.
