With Max Biaggi absent, all eyes are now on the battle between Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) and Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team), the only riders now capable of winning the title. Points leader Checa took the early advantage with quickest time in the morning's free practice in 1 minute 49.234 seconds. Right behind was Britain's Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsports) and Melandri.

Fourth slot went to Czech rider Jakub Smrz (Effenbert - Liberty Racing Ducati) with Jonathan Rea next up for Castrol Honda. Sylvain Guintoli was sixth for Effenbert-Liberty followed by Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare).
