British rider takes first podium of the season

Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) secured a sensational podium in front of his home fans at Donington Park in a dramatic Saturday race, which saw Lowes be outside of a points scoring finish on the first lap.

Fighting through the field in a heroic ride, Lowes was able to keep a cool head and calmly worked his way through the field and was fighting up in the top five in the closing laps. In a sensational final lap, the 26 year old took advantage of a frantic last lap and slid into the top three and took the final podium spot in front of his home fans.

“It’s always fantastic to race in front of the home fans,” Lowes begins. “It’s the only chance we get. I thought it was all over in the first corner, someone hit me from the inside and I was nearly off the track and I managed to stay calm and focused and after that it was one of the most enjoyable races I’ve ever had, the 23 laps seemed really short but the bike was great, I enjoyed it a lot, we got a bit of good luck after Melandri made a mistake but it’s nothing more than the guys deserve. I’m really happy to give something back to them. I expected to be the next fastest guy but I knew I could keep my pace to the end of the race.”

Race two begins at 15.00LT, and keep up with all the racing action with the WorldSBK VideoPass.
