Last day of WorldSBK preseason testing begins at Phillip Island

Better weather greeted the teams and riders of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship this morning as they arrived at the Australian circuit, after yesterday saw all test sessions for both WorldSBK and WorldSSP affected by rain and moisture on the track.

Reigning Champion Jonathan Rea ended the session fastest with a 1’31.249 on his Kawasaki ZX-10R, a couple of tenths slower than the fastest lap of yesterday set by teammate Tom Sykes. Aruba.it Ducati rider Davide Giugliano was second fastest this morning just over a tenth and a half back, with Michael Van Der Mark the first of two Honda machines making it into the top 5. MotoGP Legend and Van Der Mark’s teammate Nicky Hayden ended the session fifth, with fourth position recorded by 2014 WorldSBK Champion Sylvain Guintoli, who had ended yesterday in P6 on the combined times on the new Yamaha YZF R1.

Although the rain stayed away, the session still saw interruptions for red flags, with the first near the start of the session as Xavi Fores and Jordi Torres both independently ran into trouble. Fores ran into the gravel at Turn 1 before the subsequent lap saw compatriot Jordi Torres highside at Turn 2. After going to the medical center, Torres has been left with a wound on his left elbow that he hopes to get a small operation to fix tomorrow. Teammate Reiterberger also suffered a crash that caused a red flag.

The session ended early with another red flag caused by a bad crash for VFT rider Fabio Menghi in the final sector. Menghi has been taken to the medical center for a check up.
