Rea & Cluzel have eyes on Pirelli Best Lap Prize

Tuesday, 7 July 2015 08:04 GMT

Clear leaders in WorldSBK and WSS for Pirelli Award.

The Pirelli Best Lap Awards for World Superbike and World Supersport are being led currently by Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta Reparto Corse).

The WorldSBK championship leader has taken eight fastest laps so far this year: that’s 50% of the fastest laps available so far in 2015. With five of them coming in the last eight race events, Rea is looking odds-on to add the Pirelli Best Lap prize to a potential World Championship crown although, as we have seen in the past, it’s never over until the final chequered flag of the season.

With fastest laps in the first races of Aragon and Imola as well as Race 2 at Donington Park, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) now sits equal second on three fastest laps with Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati SBK Team). Leon Haslam (Aprilia Racing Team – Red Devils) and Davide Giugliano (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati SBK Team) are the only other riders to have achieved a fastest lap to date this year and, with ten races still left on the calendar, they can all still take the prize, as could any of the WorldSBK riders lining up on the gird for the final five rounds.

The story in World Supersport for the Pirelli Best Lap Award is a different story, however, with Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) needing just one more best lap in any of the four remaining WSS races to take the prize.

The Frenchman has amassed five best laps, four of which have come in the final five races as he has piled on the pressure in his attempt to overhaul series leader Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) who has two fastest laps: Phillip Island and Portimao. With Sepang, Jerez, Magny-Cours and Qatar to round out the year, expect more lap records to be broken as both Cluzel and Sofuoglu push each other to the limit in an attempt to not only win the Pirelli Best Lap Award, but the World Supersport Championship crown.

PJ Jacobsen - who switched teams recently - is the only other WSS rider to have notched up fastest lap. This came at Aragon back in April, before he joined the CORE Motorsport Thailand team.
