Welcoming a new star into WorldSSP, multiple Moto2™ World Championship race winner Lorenzo Baldassarri finds a new home in the WorldSBK paddock. He joins forces with Fabio Evangelisti’s Evan Bros. Yamaha WorldSSP Team, double Champions and reigning runners-up. Baldassarri has already been quick in testing and will be hoping to return the Italian team to the top in his rookie season.
Baldassarri first came into the spotlight at the tender age of 14 when he won the 2011 Red Bull Rookies Cup and with his age being so young, had to remain in the class for another season, taking just one win as he outgrew his machinery. Nonetheless, his long-awaited Grand Prix debut came in 2013 in Moto3™ but size was not on his size. 2014 saw him move up to Moto2™ and he was straight in the points and in the top ten, his size being better for the intermediate class. A maiden podium came in 2015 at Phillip Island for the Forward Racing squad, before a first win in 2016 at home at Misano catapulted him into the limelight.
A tricky 2017 saw Baldassarri injured and off the rostrum but the 2018 season was better, with a win returning and podiums coming back, before 2019 saw him win three of the opening four races, but consistency letting him down. A podium at the start of the disrupted 2020 season was his last to-date in World Championship racing, as he switched to MV Agusta in 2021 and scored only three points. An immense talent and now with renewed hope and rejuvenated ambitions, can ‘Iron Balda’ live up to the hype and deliver in WorldSSP?
