Masia strikes again in FP1 on Day 2 with three Triumphs and a ZXMOTO giving chase from the top six
Again in P2, Philipp Oettl is shaping up to be a name to watch in the 2026 title fight.
The FIM Supersport World Championship’s stacked field of 2026 riders returned to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for Day 2 of their Official Australia Test. The field at last took full advantage of sunny conditions Down Under to square away their setups for the upcoming round on the weekend. Jaume Masia (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) topped the timesheets in both sessions on Day 1, and on Day 2, kept his nose to the grindstone to top the order again, followed by Philipp Oettl (Feel Racing WorldSSP Team) and Ondrej Vostatek (Compos Racing Team).
Jaume Masia again showed dominant form on Day 2, laying down four sub-1’33s laps, a pace only Oettl managed once. The Spaniard finished FP1 with a 1’32.607s time that saw him to the top of the order. Oettl was again among the top names on the order; he and Masia were the only riders to have broken the 1’32 mark, a pace that only the pair and Oli Bayliss (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) reached on Day 1. The German’s time of 1’32.758s saw him take P2 at the close of Day 2’s FP1. Ondrej Vostatek showed that his Day 1 pace was no stroke of luck now back atop Triumph machinery, clocking in a 1’33.090s time that saw him to P3.
Seeing Aussie rider Oli Bayliss (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) near the top of the order at his home round is nothing new, and Day 2’s FP1 was no exception, the Triumph rider took P4 thanks to a 1’33.147s effort. Valentin Debise (ZXMOTO Factory Evan Bros Racing) looks to be loving his feeling atop the brand new ZXMOTO 820RR ahead of the manufacturer’s first season in the Championship. The Frenchman piloted the three-cylinder machine to a 1’33.178s time to take P5. Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) landed British factory machinery up in P6 for three Triumph bikes in the top six thanks to his time of 1’33.272s.
Can Oncu (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) looks to be continuing to get up to speed with his new team, while he again missed the top three positions on Day 1’s opening FP1, few would doubt the Turk’s potential once he and the defending Teams’ Champion Ten Kate Racing squad iron out all the wrinkles. Oncu finished the session in P7 with a time of 1’33.322s. Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha) was right around his Day 1 pace, taking P8 on account of his 1’33.346s time. Matteo Ferrari (WRP Racing) continued to show strong pace on his new WorldSSP machinery, landing P9 with a time of 1’33.394s. Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Racing Team) looks to have shaken off his Day 1 crash as he took the final place in the top 10 thanks to a 1’33.408s effort.
The session ended five minutes earlier than planned as Jacopo Cretaro (Flembbo by Racing Development) crashed on Turn 11, inciting a red flag and curtailing the session as there wouldn’t have been enough time to restart track action. The #73 was taken to the medical centre where he has since been ruled fit and able to continue.
