LATE DRAMA: Vannucci recovers from mistake for WorldSPB victory, Salvador on the podium after monster final-lap save
Buis cuts Salvador’s Championship lead to a single point after snagging P2 from the Spaniard
The FIM Sportbike World Championship is back in action At Most on Saturday as Matteo Vannucci (Revo-M2) rang in the category’s third-ever round with a Race 1-winning effort. Joining him on the podium was Jeffrey Buis (Track & Trades Wixx Racing) with a late attack for his third WorldSPB podium and David Salvador (Team ProDina Kawasaki XCI), whose P3 points defend his Championship lead now down to one point ahead of the Dutchman.
VANNUCI DOMINATES YET NEARLY SLIPS OFF PODIUM
David Salvador (Team ProDina Kawasaki XCI) was beaten into Turn 1 by Matteo Vannucci (Revo-M2), but by the dive into the first chicane on Lap 2, there was a hungry pack of riders, including Salvador, Fenton Seabright (PHR Performance Triumph) and Antonio Torres (Team ProDina Kawasaki XCI) behind him. Vannucci tried his best to run away with the race atop his Aprilia RS 660 Factory; he couldn’t manage to put space between himself and Salvador at the front of the pack behind him, which by Lap five of 12, six riders stalked behind the #91 within a second of P1. Vannucci was meticulous in his defence of P1 until he ran wide in Turn 2 and fell back to P4 on the penultimate lap. Frustrated by seeing his hard work go to waste, he steadied himself and methodically went back to work, reclaiming the three positions he had lost during the final lap.
SALVADOR’S SUPER SAVE
With his recovery to P1, Vannucci takes his first win in WorldSPB, and earns Aprilia their first victory in the WorldSBK paddock since 2018, back with Max Scheib in STK1000. Jeffrey Buis (Track & Trades Wixx Racing) had an impressive recovery of his own as he started from P11, climbed to P4 by Lap 7, and finished in second place for his third podium of 2026. David Salvador (Team ProDina Kawasaki XCI) rode a strong race as he led the dogged pursuit of Vannucci for most of the race, and pulled off a massive save on the Turn 15-16 chicane to save a podium from what nearly was a finish in the gravel.
ODD-MAN OUT TORRES
Antonio Torres (Team ProDina Kawasaki XCI) was just 0.014s slower than his teammate to miss the podium; P4 spells his best result since the season-opener at Portimao. Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki) was stuck for most of the race around the middle of the lead group, and while he set fastest laps early in the race, he and his teammate Xavi Artigas finished in P5 and P6, with the pair 0.014s apart and the Dutchman half a tenth behind Torres.
TWO TRIUMPHS IN TOP TEN
British rider Fenton Seabright (PHR Performance Triumph) landed in P7, a tenth and a half behind Artigas to finish as the top rider for the British manufacturer. Bruno Ieraci rode well while his teammate, Elia Bartolini (CM Triumph Factory Racing), was given a Double Long Lap Penalty for his involvement in a Warm Up Lap crash involving Pepe Osuna (Deza-Box 77 Racing Team). In P8, Ieraci followed Seabright home to place two Triumphs in the top ten for the third time in five races. Ferre Fleerackers (Track & Trades Wixx Racing) crossed the line in P9, three seconds behind the Italian, but just half of a tenth ahead of Benat Fernandez (Kove Racing Team 109), who makes a marginal improvement on his Assen Race 2 P11 as he hits his 2026 mark inside the top ten.
