Vierge undergoes successful surgery on cuboid bone fractures in his right foot
The #97 was injured in a Lap 1, Turn 1 collision involving Jonathan Rea and Alvaro Bautista, with Xavi Vierge going under surgery following further examinations
Xavi Vierge (Honda HRC) has successfully undergone surgery on his right foot following a crash during the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship visit to the Autodrom Most. Vierge was caught up in a crash at the first chicane at Most during Race 2, which left him with a suspected fracture on the tarsus of his right foot. After further examinations in his native Spain, Vierge had surgery to stabilise the fractures in his cuboid bone in his right foot.
At the start of Race 2, Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha) made contact with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) at Turn 1, which led to the #19 hitting Vierge as he made his way through the gravel. He was taken to the medical centre for a check-up before returning to Spain where he was evaluated further. There, the need for surgery was confirmed and Vierge had that this week to stabilise the fractured bone. Four screws were fitted as part of the surgery.
A statement from Honda HRC said: “Honda HRC rider Xavi Vierge has successfully undergone surgery to treat multiple fractures of the cuboid bone in his right foot. The injury was sustained during Race 2 of the recent Czech Round at Autodrom Most, when a blameless Vierge was caught up in a multi-rider collision at Turn 1. Following initial medical assessment at the circuit, Vierge immediately returned to Spain for further evaluation by Dr. Xavier Mir at Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona. Detailed examinations confirmed the need for surgical intervention to stabilise the fractured bone. The procedure included the insertion of four screws to fix the bone and was completed successfully.
“Determined and fully committed as ever, Vierge is already focused on his recovery and will begin an intensive rehabilitation program right away. His treatment plan will include physiotherapy and hyperbaric chamber sessions, with the aim of accelerating the recovery process. Xavi’s goal is to try and be back on track for the upcoming Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round, taking place at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” on June 13-15. The Honda HRC team will provide further updates on Xavi Vierge’s recovery in due course.”
