Vannucci takes advantage of Race 2 chaos, Championship contenders hit trouble at Aragon

Sunday, 28 September 2025 14:17 GMT

While Vannucci cruised to his first win since 2023, the rest of the grid laid it on the line as the top 12 finished within a second of P2

The FIM Supersport 300 World Championship field took to the Motorland Aragon tarmac for the final race of the Tissot Aragon Round weekend. Clouds gathered as temperatures dropped slightly in the afternoon over what proved to be a chaotic finish to the Spanish weekend. Matteo Vannucci (PATA AG Motorsport Italia WorldSSP300) took his fourth win in the Championship as he rode clear of the series of crashes that unfolded behind him, costing the rest of the grid valuable time. The #91’s race win was his first since Imola 2023, more than two years ago. Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki) scored his second podium since returning to the category. Humberto Maier (Yamaha AD78 FIMLA by MS Racing) rounded out the rostrum spots, the Brazilian’s seventh podium. Championship leader Benat Fernandez (Team #109 Retro Traffic Kove) tumbled to P10, slightly lifting his lead to 13 points, while his main title rivals all finished in the gravel without points

FREE AND CLEAR: Vannucci strode to an easy race win, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the field

Juan Risueno (MS Racing) maintained P1 from pole as he claimed the holeshot to start the race; however, Carter Thompson (MTM Kawasaki) quickly pushed him to P2 in Turn 4 of the opening lap. He, Risueno, Jeffrey Buis (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) and Matteo Vannucci (PATA AG Motorsport Italia WorldSSP300) clashed throughout the first two laps until suddenly, on the entrance of Turn 5, the Australian lost the rear, and a big high-side crash sent him and his bike sprawling. His bike slid into the path of two-time World Champion Buis, ending his day as well. In rapid succession, David Salvador (Team ProDina XCI) and Phillip Tonn (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) crashed in Turn 14, and Roberto Fernandez (Kawasaki Junior Team by MTM) saw the gravel in Turn 7.

Risueno was the next to tumble as he lost the rear in Turn 3 of Lap 6, becoming the fifth rider to crash out from the top 10 positions before he was taken to the medical centre. Having eluded the chaos of the crashes behind him, Vannucci broke away, riding almost 8 seconds ahead of the pack behind him by Lap 7 of 11. By the time he saw the chequered flag, the Italian rider had accumulated a gap of 10.135s, the third-largest gap ever recorded in WorldSSP300. Behind him, Veneman and Maier

OSUNA SETS SEASON HIGH: His P6 bests his previous high of P8

Daniel Mogeda (Pons Motosport Italika Racing) improved on his P8 recorded in Race 1, his P4 matching his Race 2 result from Magny-Cours. Jakob Rosenthaler (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) impressed in his wildcard bid as he took home P5 from Aragon. Pepe Osuna (ZAPPAS-DEZA-BOX 77 Racing Team) in P6 can be happy with his home round as he set a new 2025 best WorldSSP300 result.

FERNANDEZ MISSES CHANCE TO PUT THE DAGGER: The Championship leader takes home just six points in P10

Indonesian rider Felix Mulya (ProGP NitiRacing) also tied the best result of his rookie season in P7. Antonio Torres (Team ProDina XCI) takes home eight points from his home round after his Race 1 crash, his P8 placing him ahead of Unai Calatayud (ARCO MotoR University Team) and Championship leader Benat Fernandez (Team #109 Retro Traffic Kove), who snuck into the top 10 after being applied a Long Lap Penalty by FIM WorldSBK Stewards for a track limits violation. His P10 will earn him six points, lifting his Riders’ Championship lead to 13 points; however, as the four riders behind him in the standings all registered DNFs, the Spanish rookie will have hoped to take a larger advantage of his rivals’ misfortune.
