Toprak claims P1 in Magny-Cours Warm Up session; Seven riders within a second of ‘El Turco’
Making final adjustments to their bikes before the final day of racing in France, no rider could lay a finger on the trailblazing Turk
The final day in France is officially underway as the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s riders took to the track on Sunday morning for their Warm Up session. The good weather held overnight, and the grid zipped around the track, hoping to square away their setups under a cloudless blue sky above the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. In the event, Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) had the quickest lap, faster than Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) and Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) , who clocked in second and third fastest.
STRONG START ON SUNDAY: Razgatlioglu leads Magny-Cours’ opening event of the final day
Toprak Razgatlioglu again stamped his name as the fastest of the bunch in the Warm Up session. His fastest lap of 1’35.671s saw him place 0.039s faster than British rider Sam Lowes, who earned P2 ahead of Nicolo Bulega. ‘Bulegas’ will need to find something quickly if he wants to prevent a fourth consecutive hat-trick for his Turkish rival. The #11 clocked in a personal fastest time on the session of 1’36.044s across the 10-minute session.
BIMOTA ON THE CLIMB: Alex Lowes lands another strong result for his returning manufacturer
After his Race 1 podium, Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) kept things rolling for P4 via his 1’36.271s time. Joining him in the top five for the first time this weekend, Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha) came flying out of the gate to lead the session early before he and his 1’36.437s time descended to P5. Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) took 6 on the timesheet through his 1’_ time. The Italian will look to get back on the podium in France later today for the first time since Donington Park.
GERLOFF HOPING TO BOUNCE BACK: After a disappointing Race 1 crash, #31 rolls up his sleeves, hoping to salvage points on Sunday
Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) finished P7, just over a tenth of a second slower than ‘Petrux’ in front of him. Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) clocked in at 1’36.684s to make it two Bimota bikes in the top ten. Xavi Vierge (Honda HRC) was just over a tenth off the #47’s back wheel, placing in P9 by the end of the session. Garrett Gerloff's (Kawasaki WorldSBK Team) 1’26.841s time earned him P10. The Texan will look to get back on the horse after a disappointing Race 1 saw him crash out from what would have been a top-eight finish.
