Thompson closes Estoril with a win over Fernandez in P2 as the WorldSSP300 title will come down to Jerez
Kawasaki claimed the Manufacturer’s Championship with the Australian’s Race 2 victory
It was an electric afternoon in Estoril on Sunday as the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship field closed out the EICMA Estoril Round weekend. Carter Thompson (MTM Kawasaki) topped the rostrum with his third win in the Championship. Benat Fernandez (Team #109 Retro Traffic Kove) chased him across the line as he scored his fifth podium of the season in P2, and Daniel Mogeda (Pons Motosport Italika Racing), who landed his sixth career podium, will ride to Jerez with an Estoril Race 2 podium in his back pocket. With a win ahead of the #7 directly behind him, The Australian cuts his title deficit to 10 points, now sitting five points closer behind Fernandez, who maintains his Championship lead. David Salvador (Team ProDina XCI) missed the podium in P4, meaning his deficit to P1 increases to 22 points. While this is not insurmountable, with one round left, all eyes are now on Jerez.
FULL GAS TO THE LINE: 0.036s separated P3 from P1
Benat Fernandez soared ahead of the pack from pole position ahead of Juan Risueno (MS Racing) and the rest of the peloton, but was quickly shuffled down to seventh. By Lap 2, Salvador led the contest up from his P7 start position; he and Thompson were fighting for the race lead by the contest’s halfway point. The Kawasaki riders by that point had established a gap of just over half a second ahead of Benat Fernandez, who clashed with Daniel Mogeda and Antonio Torres (Team ProDina XCI,) who attempted to play tail gunner for his teammate Salvador. By the final lap, Juan Risueno and #7 towed the rest of the pack up to the lead pair. By the final straight, while Risueno was swallowed up by the pack to finish P9, Benat and his Kove machine powered up to P2, just 0.01s behind Thompson. The Aussies’ 25 points clinched Kawasaki the 2025 Manufacturer’s Championship ahead of Yamaha, which earned second. Mogeda was one of the final straight mayhem’s big winners as he landed his second podium of 2025, his first since Assen.
SALVADOR UNLUCKY ON FINAL STRAIGHT: Despite leading the race for three laps, he falls to P4 by a mere 0.005s
David Salvador's (Team ProDina XCI) P4 is a tough break for his Championship hopes as he will arrive at the final round of the season 22 points behind the Championship leader. Antonio Torres was a part of the fight at the front, even leading Fernandez from P3 as he hoped to bolster his teammate’s title position by holding off the #7 behind him. Torres, however, will have to make do with a P5 finish after losing positions in the final sector. Matteo Vannucci (PATA AG Motorsport Italia WorldSSP300) dropped back in the first lap all the way to P16, as he was forced wide and lost several positions. The Yamaha R3 rider recovered well to throw his hat in the ring for the final run to the line, coming out in P6 after the dust from the photo finish settled.
TOP 10 FINISHERS: 10 riders finished within a second of first place
Jeffrey Buis's (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) pace dwindled as the race continued despite clashing with the Championship leaders early on. He slid back to P7, where he finished the contest. Pepe Osuna (ZAPPAS-DEZA-BOX-77 Racing Team) improved his P13 grid start to a P8 finish as he clocked in just two hundredths slower than Buis. Risueno flexed the Yamaha R3’s power on the straights however, he was unfortunate to tumble down the order to P9 from his third-place grid start. Three positions behind his fellow KTM rider, Austrian wildcard Jakob Rosenthaler (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) snagged the final spot of the top 10 places after starting P17.
