The current iteration of the Yamaha R1 is the 10th generation of the bike, and it has been honed into an elite racing machine that not only competes with the field’s other bikes but also looks good doing it. With its unique canards and distinctive air intake, the R1 is a machine artfully crafted to catch the eye as it leaves onlookers in its wake. The R1 has been a staple of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship for almost 25 years, faithfully updated and reinvented by the Japanese manufacturer, accumulating a litany of accolades over the years. First developed in 1998, the R1 made its debut in WorldSBK in 2003. In 2005, Noriyuki Haga earned the bike its first win at Brno Race 2 in his first year back with Yamaha. Since then, famous names like Troy Corser, Ben Spies and Eugene Laverty have piloted the R1, propelling two riders to World Championship victories first with Spies in 2009, and later with Toprak Razgatlioglu in 2021 for Yamaha’s second Riders Championship.
