Sam Lowes opens Sunday hot as the Englishman tops the timesheets in Warm Ups
The #14 outpaced the defending Champion by more than two tenths of a second to kick off Aragon’s final day
Bright and early on a sunny day at MotorLand Aragon, the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship field took to the track to make their final adjustments before the outset of the final day of racing of the Tissot Aragon Round. The 10-minute session was headed up by Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) followed by Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) and Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team)
‘El Turco’ was fast right out of the gates, rising quickly to the top of the timesheets, followed by Ducati independent Sam Lowes and Alvaro Bautista. The Ducati factory and independent pair settled in as the time ticked on and ended up surpassing ‘El Turco’ in the final minute of the session thanks to the British rider’s 1’48.648s time and shuffling the defending Champion to P3. The #14 and #19 will look to avenge Razgatlioglu’s shattering of their manufacturer’s eight-race win streak at the circuit, and more importantly for the Championship picture, they will hope to spoil the #1’s hopes of breaking his 13-race win streak.
Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) was fourth fastest in the short session, again showing the capabilities of their nascent KB998 Rimini platform. Just four thousandths of a second behind the Bimota rider, Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) finished top Yamaha with his time of 1’49.099s. Tailing his teammate on the timesheets, Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha) finished sixth fastest as the nine-time race winner here at Aragon looks for a Hollywood ending to his WorldSBK career now into his final three rounds.
Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) clocked in seventh-quickest on Sunday morning, his 1’49.357s time just a hundredth of a second faster than his rookie teammate Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team). After sliding into a late P9, Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) looks to get back into the fight for the top five after his P10 in Saturday’s Race 1. Andrea Iannone (Team Pata Go Eleven) rounded out the top 10 as he will look to replicate his 2024 race win here in Aragon after an encouraging Free Practice time on Saturday as well.
