Di Persio extends series lead with Race 2 victory at Donington Park
Alessandro di Persio extended his FIM Yamaha R3 BLU CRU World Cup championship lead with a commanding victory in Race 2 at Donington Park, breaking clear of the chasing pack on the final lap to secure a third win of the season
After a second place on Saturday, Di Persio (Italy) was once again in the hunt throughout the ten-lap encounter, but in true R3 Cup-style, it was not a simple ten lap race for the Italian, who dropped through the pack at various points before ensuring he was where he needed to be in the final two laps. Crossing the line to lead the final lap, Di Persio was remarkably able to pull a 0.7 second gap in the first sector, before a coming-together within the chasing pack extended that to over two seconds by the time he took the chequered flag.
Mario Salles (Brazil) took second place to launch himself into championship contention after a tricky first part of the season, with Emanuele Pastore (Italy) completing the podium in third.
Second place for the USA’s Chris Clark saw the early championship leader retain second place in the standings, albeit now 27 points behind the ever-consistent Di Persio.
Coming back from injury, Xarly Mendez de Oleo (Dominican Republic) secured fifth with Arai Agaska finishing sixth after once again missing out on his chance to fight for a maiden victory after becoming involved in a last-lap incident.
Dawid Nowak (Poland) crossed the line seventh ahead of Troy Sovicka (Czech Republic) and Angelo Mottola (Italy), with debutant Ivan Spada (Italy) completing the top ten.
Race 1 victor, Teppei Kugawa (Japan) was in the hunt until an incident on the last lap meant he crossed the line 15th. Aymon Bocanegra and Kakeru Okunuki also went down on the final lap.
Di Persio now leads the championship by 27 points over Clark, with Salles moving third, 36 points behind the leader.
The series resumes in Hungary for Round 4 of the 2025 championship in two weeks’ time.
Alessando di Persio said: “This is amazing! Donington is a magic circuit, one of my favourites – it is part of my heart! My first win in the world championship came here last year, and now I have taken another. Thank you to my team, but from me and my team, this win is for Borja Gomez.”
