Migno set for WorldSSP debut with MIE Honda at Portimao

Thursday, 28 September 2023 11:30 GMT

Moto3™ race winner Andrea Migno will stand in for Adam Norrodin for Honda at Portimao, with the team fielding three riders this weekend

Andrea Migno will make his FIM Supersport World Championship debut at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve with the PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda Team as he steps in for Malaysian star Adam Norrodin. Migno, who’s competed in Moto3™ since 2013, will ride the Honda CBR600RR-R alongside Tarran Mackenzie and Ibrahim Norrodin with the latter making his second appearance in the Championship after making his debut at Aragon.

Migno made his Moto3™ debut back in 2013 in Barcelona and a second appearance followed at Brno. In 2014, he competed in the second half of the season and scored points at Misano for his only points of the year. This translated into a full-time ride for 2015 and he consistently fought for the top ten, finishing with 35 points. He almost doubled this in 2016 and took his first two podiums with third at Assen and Valencia. A year later and he celebrated his first win on home soil at Mugello, with his upward trajectory continuing: he moved into the top ten of the standings for the first time.

Another podium came in 2018 – at Le Mans – before two more in 2019. These came at COTA and again at Valencia before a podium-less campaign in 2020. He returned to the rostrum in 2021 and scored three podiums including two at Portimao (in the Portuguese and Algarve Grands Prix) and Misano. He had to wait until 2022 for his second Moto3™ win which came at the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix before his second podium came at COTA. In 2023, he took a podium in Argentina but only had a short campaign, before he made his MotoE™ debut at Misano; scoring points in Race 2.

Now, he will make his WorldSSP debut at a circuit he’s had a lot of success at. Discussing this, the 27-year-old said: “First of all, I want to thank the PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda Team for giving me this

wonderful opportunity in what is a whole new racing world for me. I am very excited and will do my best to enjoy it together with the whole team. I feel ready and am looking forward to this new experience, which I can already sense is going to be a great one.”

Migno will have two teammates for his WorldSSP debut, with full-time rider and one-time WorldSSP winner Mackenzie and wildcard Norrodin joining him. Malaysian star Norrodin made his debut at Aragon, in place of brother Adam, with the latter still missing out. Honda will field three machines at Portimao as they go in search of a good result.
