The 2022 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship gave an explosive Motul Argentinean Round at the Circuito San Juan Villicum in Argentina, with all eyes on the title fight and also those who got amongst the battle. From history making victories to Superpole standouts, the stats round-up following the dust settling in South America make for interesting reading.
399 – Italy are on the verge of a 400th podium after Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) took the country’s 399th with third in Race 1 at San Juan.
390 – Ducati took a 390th win in their WorldSBK history with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in Race 2 at San Juan.
200 – Toprak Razgatlioglu’s (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) pole at San Juan made it the 200th Superpole which featured a Yamaha on the front row.
133/21 – 21 races have passed without Kawasaki winning. The last time a streak went on for so long was from Assen Race 1, 2006, when Chris Walker took his first and only WorldSBK win, to Nurburgring Race 2, 2011, when Tom Sykes won for the first time; the streak was 133.
100 – Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) becomes the first WorldSBK rider in history with 100 fastest laps. The next rider is Noriyuki Haga at 59, whilst the next rider still active is Bautista, tenth overall with 27.
45 – With a first pole in Argentina not going to Ducati, Razgatlioglu made it 45 poles for Yamaha in WorldSBK, just two behind Honda.
30/14 – With a 30th win of his career in Race 2 and a 14th of the season, Alvaro Bautista is now one behind double World Champion Colin Edwards in the all-time tally; Edwards occupies eighth overall.
27 – Toprak Razgatlioglu equals Noriyuki Haga’s tally of 27 Yamaha wins after a Superpole Race win.
27/24 – In 2022, Bautista has taken 27 podiums, Razgatlioglu and Rea have 24.
24/18 – For the 24th time in their careers and the 18th time this year, Bautista, Razgatlioglu and Rea share a podium after Race 2 in Argentina.
15 – With a 15th win of the 2022 World Supersport season, Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) set a new record for wins in a season. With a 72-point gap over Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team), a win in Race 1 at Mandalika secures him a second title.
7 – Seven career pole positions for Razgatlioglu after San Juan, the same tally as Chaz Davies, Noriyuki Haga and Regis Laconi.
6 – Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) became the sixth different rider to lead a racing lap in WorldSBK this season in Race 2 at San Juan.
6 – San Juan becomes the sixth circuit this year that Honda have set a new circuit top speed record. Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) achieved 319,5km/h, the same as Bautista on the Ducati.
4 – For just the fourth time in WorldSBK history, two Spaniards qualified inside the top four in WorldSBK with Bautista in third and Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) in fourth. In stark contrast, the same thing has happened in MotoGP™/500cc World Championship racing some 157 times. There’s been at least two (52 times with three and four times with four) Spaniards in the top four in MotoGP™/500cc qualifying 213 times in total.
3 – For the first time since Donington Park, Lecuona achieved three top ten finishes in a weekend.
1 – For the first time in his WorldSBK career when he’s raced in all three races in a weekend, Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) doesn’t achieve a top ten placing.
