It was another record-breaking Tissot Superpole session in the FIM Supersport World Championship as the Championship visited the Circuito San Juan Villicum for the Motul Argentinean Round. Reigning Champion Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) claimed pole position for both Race 1 and Race 2 as he set a new all-time lap record by six tenths of a second, taking his seventh pole position out of ten this season.

RECORD-BREAKING: top seven all under the lap record

Aegerter’s pole lap time was a 1’41.181s and 0.155s faster than his nearest rivals but he also went under the lap record previously having set a 1’41.408s. In fact, the top seven were all under the previous lap record which was set by Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) last season. Aegerter took his 11^th pole in WorldSSP as he finished ahead of Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing) in second place, with the Italian setting a 1’41.336s for second spot for his 31^st front row starting position. Compatriot Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP) took his first front row start since the 2020 Teruel Round with third, 0.181s off Aegerter’s pace in a tightly-contested Superpole session.

FROM ROW TWO: in the podium fight

Title contender Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) took fourth spot after finding improvements from his Friday pace, lapping 0.210s slower than Aegerter for fourth spot, while Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) in fifth after setting a 1’41.575s claimed fifth spot, with three manufacturers inside the top five. Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) was sixth after showing strong pace on both Friday and in Superpole, going under his existing lap record.

HOPING TO MOVE UP: rounding out the top ten

Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was another who found more time between Friday to move up the order, taking seventh spot ahead of Dutch rider Glenn van Straalen (EAB Racing Team) in eighth place. The top eight were separated by just six tenths of a second, showing how close the WorldSSP field is. Stefano Manzi (Dynavolt Triumph) was ninth as he looks to repeat his success while Peter Sebestyen (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team), who had shown good pace, rounded out the top ten.

HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Superpole

Debutant Bradley Smith (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) took 13^th in his first WorldSSP Superpole session, finishing one place and 0.009s ahead of Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing). Oncu’s session was disrupted by a crash at Turn 10 with the Turkish star completing only six laps in the session. The returning Luca Bernardi (CM Racing) was 19^th, 1.5s off the pace, on his first WorldSSP Superpole session in more than a year having started the 2022 campaign in WorldSBK.
