Two Red Flags interrupted running in the morning session for WorldSSP300 as Ton Kawakami topped the early running

The first session in the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship Supported Test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya got underway on Monday with Brazilian rider Ton Kawakami (AD78 Team Brasil by MS Racing) topping the timesheets by two tenths of a second in the interrupted session as crashes in the first hour of running brought out two separate Red Flags.

Kawakami had been towards the top of the times throughout the two-hour session but put in a lap of 1’56.444s to go to the top, with only Kawakami, Bahattin Sofouglu (Biblion Yamaha Motoxracing), Unai Orradre (Yamaha MS Racing) and Koen Meuffels (MTM Kawasaki) able to lap the 4.657km circuit in under 1’57s. Sofuoglu finished the session in second place with Orradre, the youngest ever winner in WorldSSP300, in third.

MTM Kawasaki duo Meuffels and Jeffrey Buis were fourth and fifth respectively after opting to not go out for the first 20 minutes or so of the session. The pair had been near the timesheets all morning from when they did venture onto the circuit, eventually finishing in fourth and fifth. It was a strong session for the Kawakami brothers as Meikon Kawakami (AD78 Team Brasil by MS Racing) rounded out the top six.

Victor Rodriguez Nuñez (Accolade Smrz Racing) was seventh fastest despite a crash at Turn 4 where he was unable to save his Kawasaki Ninja 400, while Adrian Huertas, making his debut for the MTM Kawasaki outfit was in eighth. Like teammates Mueffels and Buis, he had been towards the top of the timesheets throughout the morning but got shuffled down in the latter stages.

Jose Luis Perez Gonzalaz (Accolade Smrz Racing) was ninth fastest in the morning with 2018 World Champion Ana Carrasco (Kawasaki Provec WorldSSP300) rounding out the top ten from WorldSSP300 riders. The top ten were separated by just over a second, once again showing how close the action in WorldSSP300 is.

Dorren Loureiro (Fusport – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki) was the first to fall during the session after he came off his Kawasaki Ninja 400 at Turn 2; the left-hander that forms the second part of the chicane that starts the lap. Petr Svoboda (WRP Wepol Racing) caused the first Red Flag of the day when he crashed at the slow left-hand corner of Turn 5. A second Red Flag was brought out by Sylvain Markarian (Leader Team Flembbo) came off their bike at the revised Turn 10 left-hander, but the rider was okay after the crash. Rookie Antonio Frappola (Chiodo Moto Racing) also went down at Turn 2 as the Italian looks to get up to speed ahead of his maiden campaign and was okay after the crash.
