Huertas title permutations: how the Spanish rider can be crowned Champion in Portimao

Friday, 1 October 2021 16:05 GMT

The Championship leader can take the WorldSSP300 Championship during Race 1 for the Portuguese Round

The 2021 campaign in the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship has been an enthralling one so far but Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) finds himself in a position to secure the 2021 crown in Race 1 of the Motul Portuguese Round, with teammate Jeffrey Buis the only rider who can now stop Huertas claiming the title.

Heading into the Portuguese Round, Huertas leads his teammate by 36 points with 50 available across the final two races of the season. This means that if Huertas finishes Race 1 25 points clear and Buis has not won a race, he will be crowned Champion. Buis needs to have an 11-point swing in his favour if he is a race winner on Saturday, or 12 points if he does not win the race.

Because of the swing Buis needs to keep the title battle going until Race 2, if Huertas claims a spot on the podium in Race 1 he will be crowned Champion with a race to spare. If Huertas claims a spot between fourth and seventh inclusive, and Buis does not win the race, Huertas will be 2021 Champion. If Huertas is eighth, ninth, tenth or 11th and Buis finishes outside the top two, or if Huertas is 12th, 13th or 13th and Buis finishes outside the top three, then Huertas will be the 2021 Champion. Should Buis finishes in fifth place or lower, then Huertas will be Champion regardless of his result.
