The Northern Irishman was at the head of the field but there’s a pack of surprises in behind him

The 2020 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship was back underway on day two of the inaugural Acerbis Catalunya Round with FP3. In mixed conditions following thunderstorms in the surrounding area, a dry line did begin to form and there was no standing water at the circuit, meaning lap times constantly improved towards the end of the session. Making the most of the conditions, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) hit the top slot ahead of the Tissot Superpole session.

Jonathan Rea went about his business in his trademark metronomic fashion, setting consistent lap times and getting a good feel in the tricky conditions. Michael van der Mark (PATA YAMAHA WorldSBK Official Team) slotted nicely into second place and the Dutchman was fractionally ahead of Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha). Chaz Davies (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati) consolidated fourth place and was top Ducati whilst once again impressing was Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team), and the American completed the top five having been third after day one.

Sixth place belonged to Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati), whilst Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) was seventh. Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) was eighth and a place ahead of his British teammate Leon Haslam, although Bautista did crash in the session at Turn 4. Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) completed the top ten aboard his BMW S1000 RR. Toprak Razgatlioglu (PATA YAMAHA WorldSBK Official Team) was just 19th after FP3.
