Phillip Island was beginning to become a bit a speciality for Jonathan Rea, as the British rider aimed for a third consecutive victory at the track in Race 1, 2017. However, Chaz Davies had other ideas and was looking to stop the rot of Rea in Australia. Another Rea vs Davies classic soon ensued, as the two escaped the chasing pack to duel out front, making for yet another unpredictable final lap in which Rea would triumph by just 0.042s. It would set a pattern for the whole season, as the opening Australian round would once again serve up a treat for WorldSBK fans.
