Estoril throwback: watch Race 1 and 2 from 1993’s pivotal Portuguese Round!
It’s been a while, but we may well see more of this kind of drama from Estoril in 2020
Ahead of the return of MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship action at the Circuito Estoril that will bring the 2020 season to a close and decided Championships, we thought we’d go back through the archives in search of the last time Estoril and WorldSBK collaborated. The Portuguese venue, just a stone’s throw from the capital city of Lisbon, last hosted WorldSBK in 1993 – and was the final round that year, too – and the two races were important for different reasons.
Race 1 saw Scott Russell and Carl Fogarty, who were first and second in the Championship, both suffer DNFs, making way for a three-way fight to the flag which resulted in one of the closest finishes of the 1993 season. Race 2 saw Carl Fogarty put in a masterclass of racing to keep his title hopes alive heading to Mexico – the round that never was after it was cancelled in the middle of the event. That meant that the Championship standings after Race 2 in Portugal would be the final classification, handing Scott Russell his first and only WorldSBK title, as well as Kawasaki’s first too.
