WorldSSP: Cluzel Fastest in FP1

French MV Agusta rider quickest in red-flag affected first session at MotorLand

After a windy Thursday, the sun came back to MotorLand for Friday and it was Jules Cluzel who topped FP1, in front of rookie Randy Krummenacher and reigning Champion Kenan Sofuoglu, with all three riders within the same two tenth margin.

Honda rider PJ Jacobsen was 4th, ahead of local rider Nico Terol who completed the Top 5, exactly half a second shy of Cluzel’s fastest lap. Cluzel’s teammate Lorenzo Zanetti was the next fastest, in front of GRT rider Gino Rea. The fastest rider on track for the first time this year as part of the FIM Europe Supersport Cup was DS Junior Team rider Ilya Mikhalchik in ninth, an impressive showing and the last rider within a second of Cluzel’s time.

A red flag after a crash at Turn 2 with nine minutes remaining interrupted the end of the session, with the fast laps then coming quick and fast once the pitlane was reopened. Riders involved in the incident were Glenn Scott and Kyle Ryde. Scott will be transported to hospital in Alcañiz following the crash, with a broken left tibia, whereas Ryde has been declared fit after suffering a contusion to his hip.

With the session underway once more, Cluzel set a number of increasingly faster laps and kept his spot on top of the sheets, with Krummenacher jumping up to join him after an earlier problem was solved and he got back on track. Krummenacher leads the Championship as we head into Round 3, and is back on familiar territory at MotorLand having ridden on the track in the Moto2 World Championship.

FP2 gets underway at 14:45 local time (GMT +2.)
