‘The new Kawasaki is what we wanted’

New bike a huge confidence boost for Tom Sykes.

Last week saw Tom Sykes complete his second two-day test on the new Kawasaki ZX-10R as he took to Jerez following an initial outing in Aragon.

Despite some unplanned happenings during the second day – not least a bird strike on his best lap – the 2013 WorldSBK Champion was quick to point out the improvements.

“We suffered some issues which set us back, so we didn’t get to try the interesting things which I was hoping to do,” he began. “That’s a shame, but we still have a lot of days remaining. Honestly speaking, I think we are at a very good level and we have some very interesting things to try, which Jonathan (Rea) has already managed to try.

“The feeling with the new ZX-10R is what we have been wanting. I think we have done a good job. At the next test, we can focus on what we missed in Jerez and I think we will make some good steps forward.

“The good thing is we are improving all the time, which excites me. With Jerez not being the strongest venue for me, it is good that we have a lot of testing here because we can work on the bike and try and improve it in certain styles of corners. I am happy about that and it is good that we can come back here in a few weeks’ time.”

Although 2015 was generally regarded as a difficult season for Sykes, the Huddersfield rider finished third overall with four race wins and 15 podium finishes to his name from the 26 races. He earned six pole position, which was more than any other rider.
