Jerez – The post-race statistics

WorldSBK.com provides some interesting facts and figures that emerged from the final round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship at Jerez.

Tom Sykes became the fifteenth Superbike World Champion, the fourth from Great Britain and only the second one to win for Kawasaki in the series. Before him, only Scott Russell managed to win with the Akashi manufacturer , in 1993. World champion Tom Sykes in 2013 led 45% of the total distance run: this is the third value ever recorded (data is available since 1998) behind the 54% of Neil Hodgson in 2003 and the 49% of Colin Edwards in 2002.

Thanks to the double podium in Jerez, Sykes reached Jonathan Rea at the 20th all-time spot, at 33 podiums. Tom allowed Kawasaki to reach and pass 200 podium placements (now 201). Kawasaki is the fourth manufacturer to reach this goal after Ducati (782), Honda (368) and Yamaha (252). Sykes in Race 2 scored his thirteenth fastest race lap in 2013: this is the second all-time value, behind the fourteen of Doug Polen, back in 1991.

Eugene Laverty scored in Jerez his second career pole, taking Aprilia's season total to four, that matches the previous highest, set in 2000. The Irishman continued to dominate in the races, scoring his second season double after the one in Turkey, and taking Aprilia's season total at ten wins. Also in this case it's a record value for the Italian manufacturer, scored before only in 2010.

With the podiums scored in Jerez, now Aprilia counts 130 podiums, only four shy of Suzuki, which stands at fourth all-time.

During this season Aprilia's bikes climbed on the podium no less than 36 times: it's the highest value since 2009, when Ducati scored the same number. The season record, 64 podiums in 2003, belongs to the same Ducati. No other manufacturer was able to record 36 podiums during a season: Kawasaki scored 35 in 1993. Aprilia won its third manufacturers title, and now it's only one shy from Honda. The all-time standings has only Ducati in front of them, with 17 constructors titles.

With his Jerez wins, Eugene Laverty now counts 12 career wins: he stands at the 20th all-time place, overtaking Stephane Mertens, Regis Laconi, Ruben Xaus and Jonathan Rea (11). These 12 wins allow Ireland to overtake Belgium for Superbike wins. All the Belgian wins came from Stephane Mertens, from 1988 to 1991.

24th career podium for Sylvain Guintoli in race two: he reached at the 28th all-time spot Fred Merkel. During this season, Sylvain Guintoli retired only once, for an engine failure in Imola, race one. In all the other 26 races he always finished among the first six. In doing this, he equalled an all-time record, scored by Colin Edwards in 2002: that year Colin not only finished all the races in the first six, but in the first four, finishing fourth in the opening race and climbing on the podium in the 25 races which followed (Superbike season record).

The season ended - for the very first time - without win or fastest race lap by Ducati, which records its worst season in history, finishing sixth in the manufacturers standings. Only one podium finish was achieved in 2013 by a rookie rider: the second from Jules Cluzel in Silverstone, Race 2. This is the lowest total for the rookies since 2010, when no one of the new riders managed to climb on the podium. Last year there were seven podiums by rookies (4 Davies, 3 Baz).
