Four different machines fill top four qualifying spots
Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) went within half a second of the track best on race tyres to head up combined qualifying at Portimao, leading new champion Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati), who was the only other rider in the 1 minute 42 second bracket in terms of lap times.

Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Racing) was third, and Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) fourth. His BMW made it four different machines in the top four places, pre Tissot-Superpole.

New Superstock 1000 champion Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Ducati) was a very wild wildcard, going fifth fastest and Sylvain Guintoli (Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducati) was sixth. Sylvain's team-mate Jakub Smrz ended up seventh and the best of the Kawasaki riders was Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team Superbike) eighth. Comeback rider Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) was 17th and out of Superpole.
