Rea ahead of Checa in FP1
Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) set the quickest time in the first FP1 session at the Algarve circuit. The newly-crowned champion Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was 36/1000ths of a second behind, Rea and Checa the only two riders to dip under the 1 minute 44 second mark.

Third was an impressive Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team) with Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Sylvain Guintoli (Effenbert - Liberty Racing Ducati) fourth and fifth.

Third place challengers Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike Team) and a returning Max Biaggi were seventh and eighth, the Italian running with a special modified boot as protection for his injured foot.

On his first experience in World Superbike, Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Ducati) was eleventh quickest, while Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team) was unable to go any better than 17th.
