Supersport World Championship stats for 2012

With a strong and evenly balanced entry in the FIM Supersport World Championship in 2012, and riders from four manufacturers scoring podium places, the class passed by a few landmarks and saw new totals reached over the past few months.

Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Lorenzini) not only won a record third world title for himself but he also expanded the record total of wins that he already held for this class of racing from 17 to the new all time best of 21.

He is followed most closely in the total of wins by his new 2013 Kawasaki team-mate, Fabien Foret who now has 15 career victories. Fabien scored two of those in 2012, as the 2002 WSS champion ran out fourth overall in the points table.

The younger or simply less experienced WSS riders also made big marks on the score sheets in 2012, as rookie rider Jules Cluzel (PTR Honda) underwent an almost seamless transition from Moto2 to WSS. He pushed all-time great Sofuoglu hardest in the latter stages and won four races, a total only equalled by Sofuoglu in 2012. A great debut season as he finished second overall, only 21 points from Sofuoglu. He is now ranked inside the top 20 of WSS race winners overall.

Sam Lowes (Bogdanka PTR Honda) made the transition from rookie to race winner in 2012, taking victories at Donington and Aragon and finishing third in the points. Former SBK factory rider Lorenzo Lanzi even added his name to the list of WSS winners, in a one off ride for the Czech PRORACE Honda team at a sodden Assen in round three.

In the Manufacturers' Championship, Honda won by 14 points over Kawasaki, but other manufacturers with regular riders on their machines, Yamaha and Triumph, secured podium finishes in 2012.

Triumph secured a Misano podium with the Power Team by Suriano Daytona 675 of Alex Baldolini. He finished seventh overall, a great effort from rider, team and manufacturer in what was not an official Triumph outfit.

Russian rider Vladimir Leonov (Yakhnich Racing Yamaha) put in not one but two podiums on his Yamaha R6 in 2012, included a very popular one at his home circuit of Moscow Raceway.
