With the announcement of Can Öncü coming over to the World Supersport Championship from Moto3™ in 2020, it returns the Turkish flag to WorldSSP competition. Synonymous with success with Kenan Sofuoglu, it is time to look back at Turkey’s success in WorldSSP with Sofuoglu’s title-clinching victory for his fifth and final WorldSSP title.
Taking place during the penultimate round of the season at Jerez, Sofuoglu eased to victory after a battle with Nikki Tuuli in the early stages. But like the five-time Champion he turned out to be, Sofuoglu broke clear to win by nearly three seconds, tying up his fifth World Supersport title and thus enhancing his status as the most successful FIM Supersport World Championship rider in history.
