Can van der Mark make lightning strike twice at Brno?

The Yamaha rider arrives in Brno in the best form of his career

The hardest goal for a rider is not to win once, but to keep on winning. Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) will surely keep that fresh in his mind when he pulls on the gloves at Brno this Friday, in Round 7 of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship.

The Donington Park crowd witnessed one of the most memorable rounds in recent WorldSBK history. Van der Mark’s rise through the ranks has been promising since he first landed in the championship back in 2015, coming off his WorldSSP title triumph the year prior, and a first win was the next logical step in his amazing progression. But few expected it to arrive at Donington in Race 1, with the Kawasaki riders’ history and early form at the circuit – and even fewer predicted a Race 2 repeat. If the R1’s performance can consistently match the Dutchman’s talent, the stage will be set for a thrilling second half to the season.

The Donington double doesn’t seem to have quenched van der Mark’s thirst; if anything, he seems more determined than ever: “After Donington, I'm even more motivated to arrive in Brno! I am so happy with the wins there and the performance of the R1. I'm pretty sure that the bike has improved even more after the test we did in Brno, so I am excited to see what we can do there. I am looking forward to riding on this great track and I will be fighting as hard as I can to get back on the podium again”.

Van der Mark has never raced at Brno in WorldSBK or WorldSSP, but he did record a win there as a 19-year-old in the retired Superstock 600 Cup. He’s one of the few riders to have already tasted glory at the Czech circuit: could he make it three in a row on Saturday?
