A classic at the Cathedral – Best bits from Round 4!

    • Relive the best moments of a thrilling weekend at Assen, including wins for Rea and Sykes and an unbelievable WorldSSP performance

    A week after a fascinating round in Spain, riders from all four championships were back on the tarmac at the legendary TT Circuit Assen, a 4.5km track steeped in motorcycling history, including for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, which never fails to excite teams and fans alike.

    Assen is a truly magical place, where action is always guaranteed, and nothing is certain until the Geert Timmer Chicane is overcome one last time. One man who understands this better than most is Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), who took us for a spin around the Dutch track.

    As Race One rolled around, the thought on everyone’s mind was: can Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) take an incredible twelfth Dutch win? The answer from Rea was a euphoric yes, as the championship leader put on a clinic to defeat local hero Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK) by the thinnest of margins.     The next day there was again a Kawasaki at the top of the rostrum – but this time the victor was Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), who made the best out of a pole position start to win Race Two in utterly dominant fashion. A first win of the season for Sykes – celebrated effusively by the Yorkshireman – and also a first KRT one-two, which you can relive here.

    The first three races of the FIM Supersport World Championship season saw some breathtaking moments, but no one was ready for what Assen was about to bring. Jules Cluzel (NRT) took a fantastic first win of 2018 – the fourth winner in as many races – but the star of the show was Randy Krummenacher (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team): 27th to second and a hair’s breadth away from stealing the win. Cluzel just held on in an epic final lap, but it still remains an extraordinary performance which deserves to be watched again and again.

    Not ones to be upstaged, the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship riders provided fans of the series with a second thriller in eight days, with Luca Grunwald (Freudenberg KTM WorldSSP Team) beating a dozen-strong group of rivals in a mad last lap dash.
