Who will be the King of Aragon?

Steve English analyses who we could see on top in Spain

Just under 1000 years ago the Kingdom of Aragon was founded as an independent Kingdom within Spain. It would later grow to dominate the Mediterranean with Aragon and modern day Catalunya forming one of the most powerful unions, in the years before the Spanish Kingdom was eventually founded.

Since WorldSBK's first visit to MotorLand Aragon, Chaz Davies has made the circuit his veritable Kingdom, with the Welshman claiming five wins and being rightfully regarded as the modern day King of Aragon.

Last year the Ducati rider dominated proceedings once again at the Spanish venue, and had a combined victory margin of over ten seconds, but this year he knows that he'll need to be at his best to repeat the feat. Following a Race 2 crash in Thailand, the Ducati rider has fallen 30 points behind Jonathan Rea in the championship standings, and while it's early days in the season Davies will know the importance of winning this weekend.

Rea will also know the importance of winning this weekend, and it's likely that the Northern Irishman has two rounds circled on his calendar; Aragon and Donington Park. These circuits are the two rounds that his key title rivals in recent years, Davies and Tom Sykes respectively, have dominated. While Rea is currently batting 100% in 2017, with two poles and four wins, the reigning champion will know that at these early rounds momentum can swing quickly and easily.

One team hoping for a swing of momentum will be the Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team Ten Kate Honda squad. It has been a trying start to the campaign for the former title winning team, but with a test scheduled following the Aragon round their form could take an upward turn in the coming rounds.
