Estonian rider clinches ESS title in Spain

Following on from a tough season full of intense battles and hard racing, Hannes Soomer (WILSport Racing) was crowned the 2017 European Supersport Cup winner in the final European Round of the season at Jerez.

A race long battle for the honours ensued, and with a poor tyre selection made the Honda rider had it all to do to keep a hold of his lead in the standings. However he faced one of the toughest races of his season so far, and he was battling to keep a points scoring finish in order to take the title.

Main cup rivals Rob Hartog (Team Hartog – Jenik – Against Cancer) and Alessandro Zaccone (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) we running strong races and it looked like Soomer may lose the fight at the mid-way part of the race. However Soomer continued to dig deep on board his CBR600RR, and scored a point in the Pirelli Spanish Round. Crossing the line as cup winner, he was delighted to finish the season with a positive result for himself and his team.

“I am really happy,” begins Soomer. “It was a difficult race today, we chose the wrong tyre and Rob rode an amazing race. It was very close at the end, but it has been an unbelievable season and the team has done an amazing job the whole year, only making one mistake with the tyre. I tried to concentrate as much on the race as possible and not on the championship, but of course it’s there somewhere. I cannot change where Rob finishes, so I have to do my best and be as far up in the standings as possible. I want a say a huge congratulations to the team, congratulations to Robert and we can’t wait for next year.”
