Italian rider strong throughout UK PATA Round and ecstatic to claim first win

Alfonso Coppola (SK Racing) had a perfect weekend at the UK PATA Round as he topped the FP1 and FP2 timesheets, then grabbed his first pole position of the season on Saturday before taking full advantage of his good feeling to claim his first win in the new WorldSSP300 class.

The former European Junior Cup rider now sits second in the general standings after four rounds, with his results consistently improving as the season progresses. The Italian finished 11th in the season opener for the WorldSSP300 riders at Aragon, was third at Assen, second at Imola and now is a race winner thanks to his Donington Park success.

Indeed, Coppola is just two points behind leader Scott Deroue (MTM HS Kawasaki) in the championship classification and his UK win came at the end of a great race as he crossed the line just 0.174s ahead of second placed finisher Mika Perez (WILSport Racedays).

In third place Marc Garcia (Halcourier Racing) was also less than a quarter of a second behind Coppola on the finish line as a 13-lap contest went down to the wire.

After the race Coppola commented, “I am very happy with this result but also with the weekend in total, being first in free practice, getting pole position and winning. The race was strong, the battle with Mika, who is very fast and Marc who is also fast. I just kept calm and at the last corner I thought ‘push, push, push’ to stop them from passing me. I am very happy and thanks to Yamaha and my team for their work.”
