Read the viewpoints from Carmelo Ezpeleta regarding WorldSBK in 2018

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has been speaking exclusively with British website Bike Sports News, explaining which direction he hopes WorldSBK will head in the near future.

Believing the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship should be as production-based as possible, he hopes the rules will change as quickly as next year. Adding that the popularity of the series is growing, Ezpeleta also clarifies the updates to the rules will be fairly complex.

“The rules need to change possibly starting from the 2018 season. All teams agree about it”, said Ezpeleta. “WorldSBK is a championship for production bikes. The bikes have to be based on production vehicles, but the current situation is not like this.

“In this moment the Superbike machines are more prototypes than production bikes and this is not possible. In the past the Superbike was conceived as championship that wanted to compete with MotoGP, but this doesn’t work. You cannot compete with MotoGP. We need to go back to the original idea.”
