Reigning WorldSBK Champion could clinch consecutive title wins on Sunday

All eyes will be on Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jonathan Rea on Sunday at the Gaerne Spanish Round as he strives to clinch the 2016 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship title.

After he qualified second on the grid on Saturday then finished Race 1 in third place behind Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and his KRT colleague Tom Sykes, Rea goes into Sunday’s Race 2 with a 44 point lead over Sykes at the head of the standings.

With three remaining races this season there are now a number of scenarios which could see the Northern Irishman wrap up a second successive title on Sunday.

If Rea wins Sunday’s race and Sykes finishes lower than second Rea wins the title. Likewise if Rea is second in the race and Sykes is lower than third, the title is also clinched by Rea. If Rea is third Sykes must finish in the top five to prolong the title fight.

Additional potential title winning scenarios for Rea are as follows:

- Rea finishes fourth and Sykes is outside top eight

- Rea finishes fifth and Sykes is outside top 10

- Rea finishes sixth and Sykes is outside top 11

- Rea finishes seventh and Sykes is outside top 12

- Rea finishes eighth and Sykes is outside top 13

- Rea finishes ninth and Sykes is outside top 14

- Rea finishes tenth and Sykes is outside top 15

With Davies being 72 points back on Rea in the standings and with three races to go the Welshman is still mathematically in the title fight, but he is highly dependent on the results of both Rea and Sykes to have any chance of still winning the championship.
