Rea and Sofuoglu receive medals at annual prize-giving ceremony

Germany was the host for this year’s prestigious FIM Gala ceremony, with the Tempodrom venue close to the world-renowned Potsdamer Platz in Berlin having the honour of receiving 34 FIM World Champions, 11 FIM Team World Champions, seven FIM Legends and three special prizewinners from every motorcycling discipline in 2016.

2016 World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) was presented his medal in front of a highly esteemed audience of world champions, after his incredible season that saw him win the first back-to-back WorldSBK titles this millennium. Alongside Rea on the red carpet and up on stage to receive his medal was 2016 Supersport World Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing).

After another record breaking season, Sofuoglu made history in 2016 once again by defending his WorldSSP Crown, to win the championship for an astonishing fifth time. The Turkish rider picked up his medal in front of the world’s best, after taking the honour in Jerez in October.

Amongst the many others present were MotoGP™ World Champion Marc Marquez, who also took his fifth world title, Moto2™ World Champion Johann Zarco and reigning Moto3™ World Champion Brad Binder.

After the final toast to the class of 2016, the eyes of the motorcycling world now focus to the 2017 season – with those present facing the new year as reigning Champions and the pressure to defend their crowns once again, as they wait for the lights to go out on another season.
