Edge of Glory: Donington Highlights

The Acerbis UK Round saw records broken and some surprises

Tom Sykes arrived at Donington Park having won the last six races in a row at the UK track. Racing at home is always special, but Sykes’ success at Donington was more than home glory and a record ready to be broken. The KRT rider had a chance to make history and take another victory at the track to become the most successful rider ever on one circuit.

Jonathan Rea got back to his home track as the last man to win there before now-teammate Sykes. Rea, who hadn’t won a Race since Assen, was in the longest drought for a victory since joining KRT. With a 100% podium record in 2016 however, incredible consistency in all conditions had given the reigning Champion a mountain of a points lead for his rivals to climb as the halfway point of the season loomed large.

Chaz Davies had a more difficult weekend in Malaysia in his quest to close in on Rea in the table, and his Aruba.it Racing – Ducati teammate Davide Giugliano was the most recent Italian bike to have got on the podium. With two podium finishes in 2015 however, Davies was well-poised to move forward on an ever-improving bike with an incredible show of pace in 2016.

In WorldSSP, Sepang had seen none of the title-chasers on the podium with a trio of different faces standing on the rostrum. With a host of home riders pushing hard for glory on their local track, however, the challenge was sure to be great once again, and it was Brit Gino Rea who went fastest on Friday.

STK1000 got back on track at Donington, too, for their second visit to the circuit in recent times. With points equal at the top of the table, everything was to play for for leaders Raffaele de Rosa and Leandro Mercado; and one of them stood on the podium in the UK in 2015…
