The Italian rider happy to return to WorldSBK as a full timer.

Matteo Baiocco is eager to take on his opponents in the 2015 eni FIM Superbike World Championship, as the 30 year old Italian will make a full time return to the series after a three year absence. WorldSBK.com spoke to the former Italian Superbike Champion about the new challenge.

How long did it take to reach the agreement to race with Team Althea? When did negotiations start?
“Althea Racing is a top level team and it was not the first time we tried to work together. Some years ago we were close to reach an agreement, but this time I think all things fell into place. To sign a contract already in October turned out to be very helpful as it gave me extra motivation and serenity.”

How does it feel to return to World Superbike and to do it with such a competitive team?
“I’m happy and very motivated. I think lately I have been riding at my very best and I think I needed a team that can help me fight at the front.”

You know the Panigale very well, what can you tell us about the 2015 version given the changes to the technical rules?
“The Ducatis have been very competitive in the last few seasons, but lacked a bit of power in comparison with the other bikes. I think it will all be more leveled in 2015 and many riders and bikes will be able to fight for top honours.”

You tested the Superbike version of the 1199 Panigale R several times although you were racing on what was almost a Stock version in the Italian Championship. How many differences there are between the two bikes?
“Huge differences, from the electronics to the chassis and the engine. The WorldSBK version is much more fun to ride and gives you more room to work on. I completed many laps with the Ducati Test Team Superbike but it’s a different type of work compared to a racing weekend. People say I know the bike well but in the end I have never had one single race with it.”

What are the goals for the upcoming season?
“Hard to say. I would like to race at the front from the opening round, but only time will tell.”

What are your thoughts after the first tests?
“Well, not many to be honest as the weather did not help. We had only few hours of dry track time available, but we did a great job and I rode only the 2014 version of the bike. Having been quick enough and close to the top riders gave me some extra confidence for the future.”

What are your expectations for the January tests?
“For now I just need to keep work on improving the feeling with the bike and the team, in order to show up in Australia with some solid basis to start the season with.”
