WorldSBK PREVIEW

PREVIEW: Aragon awaits as Lecuona looks to end Bulega’s WorldSBK winning run on home soil

WorldSBK heads to MotorLand Aragon as the 2026 campaign reaches the halfway stage in Spain

The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship makes the trek from Czechia to Spain for Round 6 of the 2026 season, with MotorLand Aragon hosting the action as this record-breaking campaign hits the halfway stage. The Aragon Round has provided plenty of drama since the circuit made its WorldSBK debut in 2011, so don’t be surprised there are more epic battles up and down the grid.

BULEGA CONTINUES HIS MARCH

Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) has won 19 races in a row now, extending his record streak, and Aragon is a place he’s gone well at in the past. He won twice last year, including an epic battle with Toprak Razgatlioglu, and has only been off the podium once in six races. Iker Lecuona (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) has been closer to ‘Bulegas’ over the last few rounds and will aim to continue that on home soil, as he still chases a first WorldSBK win. The #7 now jointly holds the record for most rostrums without a win with 14, alongside Davide Giuligano. Expect Lorenzo Baldassarri (Team GoEleven) to be in the mix as well. GoEleven Ducati have previously won at Aragon with Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Andrea Iannone, and ‘Balda’ has been in superb form in his return to WorldSBK. Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) will aim to keep his podium streak going, while Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) hasn’t been on the rostrum since Assen; he'll hope to return there at Aragon, a track he has won at in WorldSSP, in 2012, and Moto2 on three occasions (twice in 2020, once in 2016).

IN GOOD FORM

Garrett Gerloff (Kawasaki WorldSBK Team) heads to Aragon in momentous form, recording four top six finishes in a row for the first time since 2024 when he took five in a row. With 68 points recorded already, he’s only 20 behind his 2025 tally, and Aragon is a circuit he’s gone well at in the past with two rostrums for Yamaha (2021, Superpole Race) and BMW (2024, Race 1). Can he climb onto the podium at Aragon for a third manufacturer? The #31 was engaged in a fierce fight with rookie Alberto Surra (Motocorsa Racing) at Most, and the Italian will hope to repeat that. Despite strong performances at both Balaton Park and Most, those were circuits the #67 didn’t know. Now, WorldSBK travels to one he’s had Moto2 European Championship rostrums at, and he’ll hope to use that to his advantage. Tommy Bridewell (Superbike Advocates) had his best day in WorldSBK on Sunday at Most too, with a P8 and P10, and Aragon is a circuit he knows too, having raced here last year for Honda with a best of P18. Tarran Mackenzie (MGM Optical Express Racing) was on course for a top seven finish at Most in Race 2 before he crashed out, but he heads to Spain full of belief after strong weekends in both Hungary and Czechia.

BIMOTA AND YAMAHA AIM HIGH

Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) has had a string of consistent results at MotorLand Aragon, more often than not inside the top six but he’s also recorded four rostrums. He’ll be looking to ensure he and his KB998 Rimini machine are fighting at the front once again, as will Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team). ‘El Bocia’ had a strong start to 2026 but a couple of tricky rounds at Assen and Balaton Park followed. He was back in the top ten at Most and will be hoping to continue that in Spain. At Yamaha, Aragon has been a tricky track in recent years. Their last podium at the Spanish venue came in 2023 thanks to Razgatlioglu, and the last non-Razgatlioglu rostrum was in 2021 with Gerloff. However, Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) and teammate Xavi Vierge have both gone well in recent rounds and will hope they can be further up the order. Stefano Manzi (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) has been in the top ten twice in the last four races and will be looking to continue that run, while his teammate, Remy Gardner, was on the podium here in Moto2 in his title-winning campaign. Elsewhere, Motoxracing WorldSBK Team duo Bahattin Sofuoglu and Mattia Rato will aim for the points.

DIXON MAKES WORLD SUPERBIKE RETURN

There are plenty of changes to the Aragon grid, with Jake Dixon (Honda HRC) making his return to action – and getting his first WorldSBK race under his belt should he be given the all-clear to race on Thursday. The #96 has been out of action since fracturing his wrist in a testing crash in Australia, but he tested the CBR1000RR-R SP machine at Misano last week. He’ll race alongside Somkiat Chantra (Honda HRC). At BMW, both Miguel Oliveira (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) and teammate Danilo Petrucci are carrying injuries, with Team Principal Shaun Muir explaining that Oliveira’s injury recovery period is usually six weeks and that they’d review the situation after Aragon; Michael van der Mark replaced the #88 at Most. If Petrucci is to race, he’ll need to pass a medical check on Thursday, as will Alvaro Bautista (Barni Spark Racing Team) who underwent surgery last week for fractures to his right ankle.
