FIM Sportbike World Championship Dutch rider Jeffrey Buis announced his retirement from professional racing on Wednesday October 21st, 2026, saying goodbye to the paddock in which he’s been crowned World Champion twice across his eight years of competition. WORLD SUPERSPORT 300 HEYDAYS
Arriving into WorldSSP300 largely unknown after a fourth-place finish in the 2018 Dutch Supersport 300 championship, he joined the WorldSSP300 field in 2019 with the Belgian MTM Kawasaki squad. In his sophomore 2020 campaign, After the opening round of the season, he sat down in P15 before setting the class alight with four wins and eight podiums in twelve races. The effort clinched his first World Championship in just his second year in the category ahead of his countryman Scott Deroue. In the 2021 season, Three wins and five more podiums took Buis to a bronze-medal finish in a hotly disputed 2021 WorldSSP300 campaign.
Buis competed in WorldSSP in two rounds of that 2021 season, and after a spending 2022 in that class, Buis returned to World Supersport 300 for the 2023 campaign. The #6 had a chaotic trio of rounds to open the campaign. He took only eight points from the season opener at Assen, a circuit where Buis typically dominates; across his WorldSSP300 career and the 2026 WorldSPB campaign, he took three wins and four podiums from the ‘Cathedral of Speed’. In Round 2 at Barcelona, he was back on the ball; with a Race 1 win and P3 in Race 2 yet struggled subsequently at Misano to take only five points from the round. Buis showed his composure over the second half of the season, however. A Magny-Cours double before P2 and a win at Aragon gave him the cushion to weather a late push from Jose Luis Perez Gonzalez and win the 2023 title by a mere seven points.
“FROM A YOUNG BOY WITH A DREAM, TO BECOMING A TWO-TIME WORLD CHAMPION…”
After racking up more wins and podiums over the final two seasons of WorldSSP300, Buis joined up with the nascent World Sportbike category, trading his WorldSSP300 KTM RC 390 R for a Suzuki GSX-8R with the Track & Trades Wixx Racing squad. He fired out of the gates in the first three rounds, taking three podiums, including a win at Assen. After a hotly contested inaugural WorldSPB season with a deep field of talent, Buis entered the boxes after Race 2 at Jerez in the season finale for the final time, and he looks back on his last eight years in the paddock fondly.
In his statement on social media, Buis said: “Every story has an ending. And after years of chasing dreams, fighting for every position and living for the next race, the time has come to close this chapter. After 18 victories, 30 podiums and 2 World Championship titles, I have decided to bring my professional racing career to an end after this season. From a young boy with a dream to becoming a two-time World Champion, it’s been a journey full of unforgettable moments, sacrifices, highs and lows. I gave everything I had to this sport, and I wouldn’t change a thing. This decision hasn’t been easy. Racing has been my life for as long as I can remember, but sometimes you have to be realistic and choose a different path. To my family, team, sponsors, partners, friends and everyone who has supported me along the way: THANK YOU. None of this would have been possible without you.”
