Mackenzie: “It’s still the aim to get fully fit for Magny-Cours”

The British rider was injured at Donington Park, underwent surgery and is now outlining a target for his return to competition

Tarran Mackenzie (MGM Optical Express Racing) suffered a major setback during the Prosecco DOC UK Round at Donington Park, his home circuit. During Free Practice 2 on Friday afternoon, the #95 lost control of his Ducati Panigale V4 R at Turn 12 and crashed, bringing out the red flag. He was taken to the medical centre, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and possible fractures to his collarbone and ankle. He was subsequently transferred to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for further examination.

The final diagnosis, in addition to a concussion, revealed fractures to his tibia and collarbone – requiring surgery – as well as injuries to the fibula and scapula that did not require an operation. A few days after the incident, the Scottish rider posted the following message on Instagram: “Ahhh, damn… it was all going so well. I’d felt the best I’ve felt on the bike all year, but unfortunately my weekend ended prematurely. A slight moment caught me out and bit me hard. I took a bit of a whack, but I’m lucky to have sustained the injuries I have after a nasty impact with the tyre wall. I finally had surgery on my tibia yesterday, and hopefully I’ll have my collarbone operated on later this week. Fortunately, my fibula and scapula don’t require surgery.  Thanks for all the messages of support. I’m lucky to have such an amazing family, friends, and team to look after me! Also, a big thank you to the marshals, medics and WorldSBK staff trackside too.”

Now, weeks after successfully undergoing both surgeries, Mackenzie is aiming to return for the Acerbis French Round, although he must first pass a medical check at the circuit on Thursday: “It’s been over three weeks now since the crash. All of last week I started to walk without crutches or one crutch, and it’s been quite positive, I think. There’s a lot of physio and a lot of rehab, all going in the right direction. My ankle is probably the worst part of it all. My collarbone is starting to heal quite good now, just need to build some strength back in it. Just around the ankle area is the main point of concern that I’m just trying to get better. But it’s been good that I can walk normally now, or limp, but get around normally just for everyday life it’s been nice for me – and getting to go home to my place in Andorra has been great too. Sleeping in my own bed felt nice the first night. So, all going in the right direction. There’re still a few weeks to Magny-Cours now. It’s still the aim to try to get fully fit for there. That’s the goal at the moment. It’s nice to have a date in mind to just trying to work towards and I think if I’m there fully fit, it’s all gone to plan. I keep trying my best and try to do as much rehab and physio as possible to try to get back on the bike as soon as possible.”
